Jan. 27 – 3rd Annual PBCA BEAR LAKE SHRIMPBOIL

By: Mickey Kay, Event Chairman and Cook

Held at Bear Lake in Blackwater River State Forest, it was a gorgeous Florida day for a drive in your LBC. Couldn't have been any nicer. Twenty-six PBCA members gathered to have a shrimp boil and fellowship. Everyone brought some type of side dish or desert. After the feast everyone was full with very little food left to take home. Five or six members came in their British cars. Due to the absence of Keith & Beth Sanders, we didn't have any driving activities after everyone finished eating. Keith all ways seemed to come up with some type of contest and he and Beth are surely missed at our functions.

The shrimp boil recipe is a blast to do with a big pot, thrown-in red potatoes, sausage, onions, corn, seasoning, and of course, shrimp. Boil everything until done, strain, spread out some newspaper on a table, and dump everything out. Everybody comes by and picks up what they want and then eat, eat, and eat! I believe everybody enjoyed the food because they kept going back for refills. I took pictures, but I am having trouble with transferring them from my camera to my computer.

    Attendees were:

  • Mickey & Kay Kay  (They couldn't drive their MGB because all the food and cooking pots just wouldn't fit.)
  • Tom & Jeanne Schmitz, Jag XKE
  • Curt & Midge Derby, MGTD (Well bundled up with the top down.)
  • Bill & Donna Weeks MGB
  • Bob & Margaret Henson
  • Bill and Pat Irby, New PBCA members who joined at the Shrimp Boil and are from Lower Peach Tree, Alabama
  • Marie Olive (with her son and a guest)  New Mini Cooper S
  • Ralph & Peggy Overly MGBGT
  • Alfred Deweese MGB
  • Richard & Darla Willows Austin Healey
  • Tom & Mary Keyser, Lotus
  • Bill & Flo Bailey, 57 Ford T-Bird
  • Gordon & Dianne Levi,  Shopping for a Brit car.

"Brits on the Bay" Planning Underway

Planning for the 2008 "Brits on the Bay" British Car Show are well underway.  We just received our first Show Class Sponsorship (Spitfire Class) from Doug Kirkley, Vance, Alabama and PBCA member.  Doug also included, for the door prize drawings at the show, an array of 13 great door prizes ranging from four “Maglites” to tool sets and several very nice tool bags.  Doug, a Spitfire owner, unfortunately will not be able to attend the show this year, but he is encouraging other Spitfire owners in his part of the state to attend.

Special note to Triumph Spitfire and GT6 owners: The North American Spitfire Squadron (NASS) will have one of their national gatherings at our show! With Doug's efforts and those of Spitfire owner and PBCA Webmaster, Mike Japp, a large field of Triumph Spitfires and GT6s will be on hand this year in Pensacola.

Show Sponsor Forms are available on the website,  Class sponsorship is $40.00 and there are many of the 26 Classes still open for sponsorship.  First asked for are first assigned.  We will again be holding a contest for the most sponsors acquired with at least five prizes going to those helping fund the show by obtaining sponsorships.

Donations of door prizes and items for the goody bags are still needed and very welcome.  Due to the show falling on April 19th, the April PBCA meeting will be one week early this year, April 14th, at Piccadilly Cafeteria and we will be doing the traditional "Goody Bag" stuffing following the regular meeting.

    Show 2008 Annoucement:

THE PANHANDLE BRITISH CAR ASSOCIATION presents our 16th annual Pensacola British Car Show on April 19th, 2008, to be held at Seville Square park just one block off Bayfront Parkway in Pensacola and only a few feet from the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A lovely vacation or weekend paradise only walking distance to restaurants and shopping in the historic downtown Pensacola area.

For early arrivals the PROTOADS* will again offer a "Red Beans and Rice" Social from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Friday, April 20th, at the host hotel party room, Pensacola Beach Resort. Registration is open Friday night and from 8:00 am to noon on Saturday. (* Procrastinating Triumph Owners And Driving Society) Judging is by "People's Choice". Each vehicle entered will receive a ballot and dash plaque placed in the car at noon. Voting closes at 2:00 pm and awards are at 3:30pm. There were approximately 24 classes in past years and classes were determined by entries received for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies. There also are several special awards and some surprise awards. This is not a "concours" show, but a chance for British car lovers to get together, display their cars and have a good time. Any car can go home with a trophy. So bring your British "ride" this year and enjoy the camaraderie.

There is also Valve Cover Racing at approximately 2:00pm. Must be a British valve cover with overall length no more than 24 inches and no propulsion other than gravity.
